In front of Andrew Moore’s lens (slide show here), even entropy in the Motor City has a production line-like geometry and compartmentalization. And recent news from Detroit suggests that the city’s “rebirth” might not spring up organically—like the flora that has reclaimed much of the metro area—but will emerge instead in the careful deconstruction of the myth of Detroit as the once-and-future manufacturing capital of the world. It needs to become the city of ideas again.
